How Middlesbrough became Fairtrade

Middlesbrough achieved Fairtrade Town status in March 2007.  This means that Middlesbrough has undertaken a series of actions to promote Fairtrade, including:

  • Middlesbrough Council has passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade and offers Fairtrade refreshments at its meetings and catering outlets.
  • The town has a specified number of retail and catering outlets stocking at least two Fairtrade products – this is determined by population and in Middlesbrough requires that we have at least 28 retail and 14 catering outlets.
  • There is strong support for Fairtrade from all sectors, including public, private and voluntary and community sector organisations.  In Middlesbrough there has been excellent support from faith groups – where much of the Fairtrade movement began.
  • The town is committed to promoting Fairtrade, including events throughout the year, with a particular focus on Fairtrade Fortnight in February and March each year.
